Baseball Team Falls in Extra Innings to Augustana

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst baseball team fell in extra innings 5-4 to Augustana College before rain suspended the second game of a doubleheader.

Elmhurst fell to 14-11 overall and 5-7 in the CCIW with the game one loss. The second game will be completed on Sunday, April 15, at Augustana prior to the final game of the three game series.

AUGUSTANA 5, ELMHURST 4 (Game One) – Augustana took the opening game 5-4 in 11 innings after Carter Amundsen knocked in the game-winning run.

Augustana grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Bluejays answered back with a four-run second inning. Austin MacMillan singled home a run and Trevor Horwath gave the Bluejays a 2-1 lead on a ground ball that was mishandled by Augustana. A second error on Reagan McReynold's grounder brought home another run. Trey Compton drove in the final run of the frame with a sacrifice fly.

Augustana pulled even with three runs in the top of the sixth to knot the score at 4-4. The Bluejays threatened to reclaim the lead, but left runners in scoring position in the seventh, eighth and 10th innings before the Vikings won the ball game with a run in the 11th.

Compton led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing with three hits and a run driven in. Jacob McMillan, Jordan Scrimpsher, Matt Wilson and MacMillan added two hits apiece for the Bluejays.

Nick Drago made the start and took a no-decision, working 5.1 innings and allowing four hits and three earned runs. He walked six and fanned six. Alex Kielion pitched well in relief but took the loss. Kielion worked five innings, allowing five hits and one run. He struck out four while not issuing a walk.

Game Two (Suspended After Six Innings)- The second game of the doubleheader was halted due to rain and field conditions after six innings. The game will be resumed on Sunday, April 15, at Augustana prior to the start of the final game of the three game series.

Augustana led 1-0 after six innings when the game was halted. The Vikings scored a run in the third on Jack Hallmark's two-out single. Elmhurst was held to just one hit for the first five innings, before loading the bases with one out in the sixth. Back-to-back fielder's choices ended the scoring threat for the Bluejays.
