Baseball Team Swept By Carroll in Doubleheader

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst baseball team slipped to 14-10 overall after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Carroll University.
 
The Bluejays fell 7-5 in game one and dropped game two 8-7. Elmhurst fell to 5-6 in the CCIW while Carroll upped its record to 12-10 overall and 2-8 in league play.
 
CARROLL 7, ELMHURST 5 (Game One) – Elmhurst's rally fell short in a 7-5 loss to Carrol in the opening game of the doubleheader.
 
Carroll scored twice in the top of the second to grab an early 2-0 lead. Elmhurst cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame. Jordan Scrimpsher led off the inning with a double and came around to score on Christian Ott's RBI single.
 
Carroll scored the next five runs, plating two in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to open up its lead to 7-1.  The Bluejays rallied in the seventh, scoring four times and bring the tying run to the plate, but a groundout ended the scoring threat. Trey Compton doubled home two runs and Jacob McMillan added an RBI double in the inning. Scrimpsher also singled home a run in the seventh
 
Trevor Horwath collected three of Elmhurst's 14 hits in the loss. Reagan McReynolds, Compton, McMillan and Scrimpsher added two hits apiece for the Bluejays.
 
Austin MacMillan made the start for Elmhurst and took the loss, surrendering eight hits and four runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings of work. He walked three and struck out four. .
 
CARROLL 8, ELMHURST 6 (Game Two) – Carroll scored twice in the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie and held on for a one-run victory.
 
Carroll raced out to an early 5-0 lead, scoring four in the second and another run in the third. Elmhurst rallied back in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs while sending 12 batters to the plate. Jacob McMillan delivered the big blow, smashing a three run homer to left field to cap the inning.
 
Carroll tied the game with a run in the fourth. The game remained tied until the top of the eighth when Carroll scored two runs. The Bluejays retired the first two batters of the inning, but a double and back-to-back hit batters loaded the bases. AJ Johnson singled up the middle to drive in two and put the Pioneers up 8-6 in the process.
 
Elmhurst cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the eighth when Reagan McReynolds' sacrifice fly drove in a run, but the Bluejays were retired in order in the ninth inning.
 
Trey Compton led Elmhurst at the plate with a pair of hits. McMillan drove in three while McReynolds knocked in a pair.

Carter Truong made the start and took a no-decision. Truong worked three innings, allowing four hits and five runs (just one earned). Alex Kielion suffered the loss in relief, despite pitching well. Kielion worked 4.2 innings and allowed five hits and two runs (one earned). He walked one while striking out three.

Logan  Johnson earned the win for Carroll, allowing seven runs and seven hits over seven innings of work. Curtis Sheahan pitched a perfect ninth inning to record the save.
 
Elmhurst hosts Augustana College on Saturday, April 14.
