Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Knoebel's Huge Game Not Enough For Bluejays

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Grace Knoebel broke a pair of Elmhurst single-game records, but it wasn't enough as the women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Saint Mary's College 20-12.

Knoebel poured in nine goals, setting a new-single Elmhurst record. She added an assist to total 10 points for the contest, establishing a new single-game points record as well.

Elmhurst slipped to 2-1 on the season with the loss while Saint Mary's improve to 1-0 with the win.

Saint Mary's scored the game's first four goals, racing out to a 4-0 lead after just five minutes. Knoebel scored from free position a minute later to put Elmhurst on the board. The two squads traded goals for the next 11 minutes as the Belle's maintained a three-goal lead at 6-3. Saint Mary's scored back-to-back goals from Kate Kelly and Erin Doyle to run its lead to five, but Knoebel struck for consecutive tallies to bring the Bluejays back to within three with six minutes remaining.

Saint Mary's pulled away before the half, pumping in four goals over the final 5:45 to open up a 12-5 lead at the half.

Knoebel scored her fifth of the game less than a minute into the second half, but Saint Mary's answered back with a 6-1 run over the next 10 minutes, building an 18-7 lead in the process. Elmhurst answered back with a 5-1 run over the next 15 minutes to pull to within seven, but the Bluejays came no closer as St. Mary's tacked on a goal in the final seconds to secure the 20-12 victory.

Saint Mary's outshot Elmhrust 33-25 in the contest and dominated on draw controls, outpacing the Bluejays 26-8. Both teams attempted 15 free position shots in the contest, but the Belles cashed in on 11 while Elmhurst scored on just six.

Knoebel led the way for the Bluejays with her nine-goal, 10-point performance. Isabel Walker, Larissa Arvanites and Theresa Marcello also scored goals for Elmhurst in the loss. Walker, Knoebel and Kallie Miller each added assists. Ellen Brown led the team in ground balls with nine. Megan Keener took the loss in goal, surrendering 15 goals in 49:20 while recording six saves.

Three players did the bulk of the damage for Saint Mary's. Erin Doyle led the way with eight goals and nine points. Clare Theisen and Kendra Osinski tallied five goals apiece for the Belles. Emily Kraker earned the win in goal, recording 10 saves while allowing 12 goals.

Elmhurst hosts Trine University next Thursday, March 15.
