Bluejays Hold Off Albion For Seventh Straight

ALBION, Mich. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team won its seventh consecutive contest by holding off Albion College for a 6-5 victory. 

Elmhurst improved to 8-1 on the season with the victory. The Bluejays built an early lead before having to hold off a late charge from Albion (2-6). 

The Bluejays jumped on the scoreboard first as Marcus Yandall fired home the first goal of the contest less than three minutes into the opening quarter. The Bluejays' lead was shortlived as Alec Palmer netted a goal just 90 seconds later to bring Albion even at 1-1. Ty Funderburk scored off a Trent Nyberg assist with five minutes to play in the quarter, giving the Bluejays a 2-1 lead after one quarter. 

Elmhurst scored the first three goals of the second quarter to open up a four-goal cushion. Funderburk scored back-to-back tallies to give Elmhurst a 4-1 lead and Mac Harden added a goal with 1:36 left in the half to put the Bluejays in front 5-1. Albions Brandon Lebioda scored with just 14 seconds left in the half to bring the Brittons to within three (5-2) at halftime. 

The Bluejays needed just 18 seconds to score at the start of the second half as Harden fired home his second goal of the game off an assist from Dan Curley. Harden's 31st goal of the season gave the Bluejays a four-goal advantage at 6-2. Lebioda scored five minutes after Harden to bring Albion back to within three. Ryan Lemanski scored with 37 seconds left in the third to pull Albion to within two goals at 6-4. 

Alec Palmer scored for the Brittons with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, bringing Albion to within a goal in the process, but the Bluejays kept Albion scoreless for the game's final six minutes to preserve the one-goal victory. 

Albion outshot Elmhurst 34-30 in the contest, including a 20-13 edge in the second half. Elmhurst totaled 27 ground balls to Albion's 24. Carter Meyer was dominant on faceoffs, winning 13-of-15 and scooping up eight ground balls for the Bluejays.

Funderburk led Elmhurst's offense in the win, finishing with a hat trick of three goals. Harden added two goals while Curley totaled two assists. Jacob Delagdo recorded the win in goal, recording 12 saves in the win. 

Lebioda and Palmer paced Albion with two goals apiece. Trevor McManus finished with 15 saves in the cage for the Brittons. 

Elmhurst opens the CCIW portion of its schedule by playing at Carroll University on April 7.
