WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Elmhurst baseball team recorded its fourth straight victory with a 4-3 win over Grinnell College at the RussMatt Invitational.
Elmhurst upped its record to 9-3 with the victory while Grinnell slipped to 1-7.
Carter Truong tossed a complete game from the mound while
Matt Wilson delivered the key base hit for the Bluejays in a three-run sixth inning.
Grinnell plated a run in the top of the first to take an early lead, but the Bluejays answered back, scoring a run on a wild throw by Grinnell in the bottom of the first. A two-run triple from Nathan Zaroban in the top of the second gave Grinnell a 3-1 lead.
The Pioneers made the lead stand up until Elmhurst broke through in the sixth.
Trey Compton and
Tyler Kledzik led off the inning with back-to-back singles.
Jacob McMillan doubled to drive in Compton and pull Elmhurst to within a run. Wilson delivered what proved to be the game-winning hit, singling to drive in both Kledzik and McMillan.
Seven different Bluejays collected hits in the victory with
Reagan McReynolds totaling two of Elmhurst's eight hits.
Making his first collegiate start, Truong was impressive from the mound. After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Truong settled in and allowed just three hits over the final 22 batters he faced. He retired 10 straight batters from the second to the fifth inning and faced the minimum number of hitters from the third through the seventh inning. Grinnell's Andrew Shults singled with two outs in the fifth, but was immediatly cut down trying to steal by
James Wick. Truong went the distance, scattering seven hits and three runs. He walked just one while striking out seven.
