LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. - The Elmhurst baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally past Hope for a 7-5 victory at the
RussMatt Tournament in Florida.
Elmhurst upped its record to 6-3 overall with the win while Hope fell to 1-8 overall.
Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, the Bluejays sent nine batters to the plate and scored three times. RBI singles from
Trey Compton and Tyler
Kledzik, along with a run-scoring groundout from
Jacob McMillan put Elmhurst in front 3-1.
Hope answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth, moving in front 4-3. Elmhurst answered back, tying the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out, run-scoring double from Reagan
McReynolds.
Hope grabbed a 5-4 lead after plating a run in the top of the sixth. Elmhurst took advantage of a leadoff error on Hope in the eighth inning. After a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt moved the tying run to third,
Austin MacMillan singled to center to knot the score at 5-5.
James Wick followed with a single, and a throwing error on Hope allowed both MacMillan and Wick to move into scoring position with one out. McReynolds put Elmhurst back in front with a two-out, two-run single to right field.
McReynolds and Wick led Elmhurst's offense at the plate with three hits apiece. McReynolds finished 4-for-5 with a run scored and three driven in. Wick was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while also scoring three runs.
Alex Kielion made the start and took a no-decision, tossing five innings and allowing nine hits and five runs. He walked two and struck out five.
Kevin Johlie picked up the victory in relief, tossing four scoreless innings and allowing just two hits. He did not issue a walk while striking out two.
Elmhurst plays a doubleheader against Clarkson University tomorrow (March 20).
