ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -
Lucas Wetherby Jonsson scored the game-winning overtime goal to lead the Elmhurst men's soccer team past Augustan 3-2 in the Bluejays' CCIW opener.
Elmhurst upped its record to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0 in the CCIW with the victory.
The Bluejays jumped on the scoreboard quickly, scoring just 1:09 into the contest when
Matt McNamara found the back of the net off of an
Angel Carreno assist.
Augustana (0-6-1, 0-1 CCIW) scored the equalizer on a Michael Peters goal in the 39th minute.
Zach Clements netted his fifth goal of the season off of a
Luke Deel assist with just four minutes remaining in the second half to give Elmhurst a one-goal lead. The Bluejays' lead did not last as Matt Allen scored just 1:46 later to knot the score at 2-2.
Elmhurst needed just 43 seconds in overtime to net the game-winner. Wetherby Jonsson scored his second-game winning goal in the last three contests to lift the Bluejays to the win. Clements added an assist on the game-winning strike.
Elmhurst outshot Augustana 15-12 in the contest, including an 11-5 edge after the half. The Bluejays also put nine shots on goal to Augustana's five while also holding a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Nick King picked up the victory in goal while recording three saves.
Elmhurst hosts Millikin University on Saturday, September 30.
