NEWARK, N.J. - The Elmhurst men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2017 season after falling 2-1 to Rutgers-Newark in double overtime.
Rutgers-Newark (5-0-0) jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring on a Stefano Muniz goal off a feed from Chigozie Atubi just 11:46 into the contest.
The lead did not last long as Elmhurst pulled level just eight minutes later.
Zach Clements netted his second goal of the season from 25 yards out off of a
Griffen Andes assist to knot the score at 1-1.
Rutgers-Newark kept the pressure on Elmhurst for the entire contest, outshooting the Bluejays 31-3, including 26-3 in regulation. Elmhurst's defense was up to the challenge, turning away multiple shots by Rutgers to keep the game even headed into a second overtime period.
Rutgers scored the game-winner three minutes into the second overtime period. Fabio De Sousa collected an Adrian Velazquez pass and scored the game winner.
Nick King stopped 11 shots in goal for the Bluejays despite taking the loss.
Elmhurst (2-1-2) travels to Dominican University on Wednesday, September 13.
