ELMHURST, Ill. - First half goals from
JD Garnett and
Matt McNamara propelled the Elmhurst men's soccer team to a 2-0 season-opening win over Greenville University at Langhorst Field.
Elmhurst (1-0) controlled most of the game's action, outshooting Greenville 17-6 in the contest, including 11-3 in the opening half.
Garnett started the scoring in the 20th minute.
Zach Clements lofted a long pass to the far side of the box. Garnett beat his defender to the ball and then beat Greenville keer Nick Holland one-on-one for his first goal of the season.Â
McNamara made it 2-0 in the 37th minute, scoring on a free kick from 25 yards out. McNamara bent a shot off the near-side post that riccocheted into the back of the net to extend Elmhurst's lead to 2-0.Â
The two first half goals was all Elmhurst needed as the Bluejays outshot Greenville 6-3 in the second half en route to the win.
Nick King notched his first shutout of the season in goal by stopping all three shots he faced.Â
