Bluejays Silence Thunder; Sweep Pair From Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. – The Elmhurst baseball team totaled 19 runs and 26 hits while sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from Wheaton College.
 
Elmhurst improved to 10-8 overall and 4-1 in the CCIW with the wins, winning their third and fourth contests in a row. Wheaton slipped to 12-10 overall and 2-4 in the CCIW.
 
ELMHURST 9, WHEATON 2 (Game One) – Elmhurst won its third straight contest by hammering Wheaton 9-2, improving to 3-1 in league play in the process. 
 
The Bluejays banged out 14 hits in the victory while Austin MacMillan pitched seven strong innings from the mound.
 
Elmhurst grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single from Trey Compton. Reagan McReynolds was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a second run for the Bluejays.
 
Wheaton scored a run in the bottom of the second to cut Elmhurst's lead in half, but the Bluejays tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-1. An RBI single from Evan Berliner and a two-run single from James Wick sparked the three-run inning.  
 
RBI singles from Ben Havel and A.J. Compton along with a sacrifice fly from Trey Compton tacked on three more runs for Elmhurst in the sixth inning, making the score 8-1 in the process. A bases loaded balk on Wheaton accounted for Elmhurst's final run in the top of the seventh.

Matt Wilson led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with a run scored. Wick collected three hits and drove in two while Havel and A.J. Compton also recorded multi-hit games.
 
MacMillan was solid from the mound, improving to 2-0 on the season with the win. He worked seven innings, allowing just four hits and two runs. He walked four while striking out one. Nathan Tovell pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing just one hit and one walk while fanning one.
 
ELMHURST 10, WHEATON 5 (Game Two) – Elmhurst completed the doubleheader sweep of Wheaton with a 10-5 win in game two.

Elmhurst jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the contest, scoring three runs in the third and another in the fourth. An RBI single from McReynolds started the scoring for Elmhurst in the third. Havel followed with a two-run double to make the score 3-0. A.J. Compton tripled with one out in the fourth and came home to score on Berliner's RBI single.
 
Wheaton pulled even at 4-4 with a four-hit, four-run fourth inning. The game remained tied until the seventh when Elmhurst cashed in on a Wheaton error to go in front 5-4. Wilson added an RBI single to put the Bluejays in front 6-4. Wheaton answered back with an RBI double from Peter Newman in the bottom of the seventh but Kiko Mari pitched out of a jam to strand runners at second and third.
 
Elmhurst blew the game open in the top of the ninth. With two on and two out, a Wheaton error extended the inning and loaded the bases for the Bluejays. Trey Compton made the Thunder pay for the mistake immediately, cracking a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam.
 
Elmhurst finished with 12 hits in the contest. Kressner, McReynolds, Wilson, Trey Compton and Berliner each collected two hits apiece. Havel knocked in two runs while Compton drove in four on the grand slam. Kressner, McReynolds and Compton all scored two runs apiece.
 
Daryl Rivera picked the up the victory for Elmhurst, improving to 2-3 on the season. He tossed six innings, allowing five runs and six hits while walking three and striking out three. Mari pitched three scoreless innings in relief to record the save, allowing just four hits while striking out one.
 
Elmhurst travels to Augustana College for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 8.
