Havel Sets Hits Record; Pitches Bluejays Past Wheaton

ELMHURST, Ill. – Ben Havel became Elmhurst's all-time leader in hits while also picking up the victory from the mound as the Elmhurst baseball team clipped Wheaton College 3-2 on senior day.

Elmhurst picked up a key CCIW win, improving to 18-16 overall and 11-9 in the CCIW. Wheaton slipped to 20-15 overall and 10-9 in league play. The Bluejays swept all three games on the season from the Thunder.

Havel wasted no time tying the all-time hits record with a single in the first inning. Two batters later, Elmhurst was on the scoreboard after Matt Wilson's sacrifice fly scored Havel.

Wheaton loaded the bases with one out in the second, but Havel recorded back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning. The Thunder pulled even with a run in the top of the third, but Elmhurst answered back with two in the bottom of the fourth to go back in front. Trey Compton's double down the left field line scored Austin MacMillan. Travis Pickard singled home Compton three batters later to give Elmhurst a two-run cushion.

Wheaton cut into Elmhurst's lead with a run in the fifth, but Havel limited the damage, getting out of a bases loaded, one out jam with a strikeout and flyout.  Havel pitched seven innings for the Bluejays and became Elmhurst's all-time leader in hits by singling into left field in the bottom of the seventh, collecting the 223rd hit of his career in the process and surpassing Dave Wolak's previous record of 222.

Havel pitched seven strong innings for Elmhurst, allowing four hits and two runs. He walked seven but fanned a season-high 11 batters while improving to 4-1 on the year. Havel gave way to Nick Drago in the eighth after a leadoff walk, and Drago shut the door, recording his second save of the season by retiring all six batters he faced.

Wheaton's Alex Hanvey took the loss, surrendering five hits and three runs (two earned). He walked three and struck out four.

Elmhurst plays at North Park University on Sunday, April 30.
