Bluejays Split Pair With Millikin

ELMHURST, Ill. – Evan Berliner's walk-off RBI single helped the Elmhurst baseball team salvage a doubleheader split with Millikin University by taking game two 6-5.

Millikin won the opener 4-2 with three late runs, but the Bluejays rebounded in the night cap, taking game two 6-5. Elmhurst moved 16-14 overall and 9-7 in CCIW play with the split. Millikin sits at 16-14 overall and 5-11 in league play.

MILLIKIN 4, ELMHURST 2 (Game One) -  Millikin scored three runs in the final two innings to score a 4-1 win over Elmhurst in game one.

Millikin struck first, scoring on an Elmhurst error in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bluejays answered back immediately, pulling even in the bottom of the first. Reagan McReynolds tripled to lead off the inning and came home to score on Ben Havel's sacrifice fly.

The middle innings turned into a pitchers dual between Havel and Millikin's Max Paolicchi. The Bluejays put runners in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth innings, but came up empty. After pitching out of a jam in the third, Havel settled in, retiring 11 straight batters between the fourth and seventh innings.

Elmhurst took its first lead of the contest in the seventh. Matt Wilson led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second. A bunt single from Trea Compton put runners on the corners with one out. Evan Berliner's grounder allowed Wilson to score with Berliner reaching on a throwing error. The Bluejays were not able to extend their 2-1 lead as a flyout and pop-up ended the scoring threat.

Millikin pulled even quickly in the eighth. Mason Bruce doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a ground out. Bruce scored on a Jake Drada sacrifice fly to pull Millikin even at 2-2.

Millikin loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. Elmhurst nearly turned a double play on Devin Crews' grounder, but Crews beat the relay throw to first, allowing the go-ahead run to score. The Big Blue tacked on an insurance run to take game one 4-2.

A.J. Compton and Wilson recorded two hits apiece for the Bluejays in the win. Havel went eight strong innings but took a no-decision. Havel scattered four hits and one earned run. He walked four while striking out 10. Alex Kielion took the loss, allowing one hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk in one inning of work.

Adam Zuk earned the win in relief for Millikin, working 1.2 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out one. Ben Peters recorded his fifth save of the season by retiring the final three outs in the ninth inning.

ELMHURST 6, MILLIKIN 5 (Game Two) – Evan Berliner's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth helped lift the Bluejays to a 6-5 win in game two.

Elmhurst put two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Evan Berliner's RBI single scored Austin MacMillan. James Wick RBI groundout brought in Trey Compton to give Elmhurst an early two-run cushion.

The Bluejays added to their lead in the third. A.J. Compton doubled with one out and scored on MacMillan's RBI single to center.  Millikin took a run back in the top of the fifth, but the Bluejays answered back in the bottom of the frame. Austin MacMillan's RBI double to center drove in A.J. Compton to extend Elmhurst's lead back to four and chase starting Big Blue pitcher Matthew Frank in the process.

Millikin cut the Bluejays' lead down to one in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs on a Seth Coffey two-out double. Elmhurst pushed its lead back to two in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Havel with two outs.

The Big Blue closed the gap to one with a run in the top of the seventh. Millikin loaded the bases with only one out, but Daryl Rivera struck out the final two batters of the inning to get out of the jam. Millikin pulled even in the top of the eighth on Julian Gonzalez's two-out, RBI double.

Elmhurst put runners on first and second with one out when Berliner delivered in the ninth, roping a single to right field, allowing Austin MacMillan to score the game-winning run.
