ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team dropped the rubber game of the three-game season series with Illinois Wesleyan University, falling to the Titans 3-1 at Butterfield Park.
Elmhurst slipped to 15-13 overall and 8-6 in the CCIW while Illinois Wesleyan upped its record to 16-11 overall and 9-4 in league play.Â
Elmhurst's bats were held in check as the Bluejays totaled just four hits for the contest and hit into three double plays. The Bluejays' pitchers kept the team in the contest, pitching out of jams and forcing the Titans to strand 14 runners.Â
The Titans struck first, scoring a run in the first inning. Jake Stewart reached on an error to lead off the game and scored on Pat Mollo's sacrifice fly.Â
Elmhurst was held without a hit for the first four innings, but pulled even in the fifth.
Jacob McMillan was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. McMillan moved to third on a single from
Trey Compton and came in to score on a double play grounder.Â
The Titans went back in front in the sixth inning after a wild pitch and throwing error allowed Jarrod Juskiewicz to score. Illinois Wesleyan tacked on another run in the seventh when Gino Cavalieri drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run.Â
Elmhurst put two runners on in the sixth and the eighth, but came up empty in each inning.Â
Kiko Mari made the start and took the loss for Elmhurst, slipping to 2-2 on the season. Mari worked five innings, allowing 10 hits and two runs (one earned). He walked one and fanned two. Nick Brune picked up the victory for the Titans, throwing six innings and allowing just three hits, three walks and one run. Sean Coonan struck out the side in the ninth to record the save.Â
Elmhurst hosts Millikin University on Saturday, April 22.Â
