Baseball Team Splits Pair With Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Elmhurst baseball team moved to 7-3 in the CCIW after splitting a doubleheader with Carthage College.
 
Elmhurst rallied for a 7-6 win in game one before falling 13-3 to Carthage in game two. Elmhurst improved to 13-10 overall with the split while Carthage moved to 13-11 overall and 6-5 in the CCIW.

ELMHURST 7, CARTHAGE 6 (Game One) – The Bluejays scored a combined six runs between the seventh and eighth innings to rally past Carthage for a 7-6 win.
 
Carthage grabbed led 4-1 after six innings, but the Bluejays' offense came to life in the seventh. Trey Compton led off the frame with a walk and moved to second on Evan Berliner's single. Jacob McMillan was hit by a pinch to load the bases. After a strikeout, Reagan McReynolds singled into left to drive in Compton and keep the bases load. Ben Havel drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. Austin MacMillan capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to pull Elmhurst even at 4-4.
 
Carthage quickly broke the tie on a Ryan Rodgers RBI single in the top of the eighth, putting the Red Men in front 5-4. Matt Wilson and Compton led off the eighth for Elmhurst with back-to-back walks. With one out, McMillan evened the score at 5-5 with an RBI double to drive in Wilson. With the bases loaded and two outs, Havel delivered the game-winning hit, singling to right field to knock in McMillan and Brandon Kressner.
 
Carthage put the tying runs on base with one out in the top of the ninth. Kiko Mari came on to pitch for Elmhurst and promptly retired Matt Rave on a fly ball to center. Reed Hero kept Carthage alive, singling to center to drive in a run and put the tying run on third base. Mari induced Jordan Wiegold to fly out to center to end the contest and secure the win for the Bluejays.

Havel drove in three runs on the day while McReynolds and Berliner recorded two hits apiece for the Bluejays.  Berliner accounted for Elmhurst's first run of the day in the third with a solo homer to left field.
 
Havel made the start from the mound for Elmhurst and worked 7.2 innings, surrendering nine hits and four earned runs. He walked two while striking out eight. Adam Price picked up the win in relief, tossing 0.2 innings and allowing just one run on two walks. Mari recorded his second save of the season by recording the final two outs.

Hero paced Carthage at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBIs. Joe Sambucci was tagged with the loss for Carthage. The reliever allowed two hits and two runs in one inning of work. He walked two while striking out one.
 
CARTHAGE 13, ELMHURST 3 (Game Two) – Elmhurst banged out 13 hits but managed just three runs in 10-run loss in game two.
 
Elmhurst jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Jacob McMillan singled to drive in a pair of runs. Carthage answered back with three runs in the top of the third to take a one-run lead, but the Bluejays pulled even at 3-3 on Ben Havel's RBI single in the bottom of the third.

Carthage went in front for good in the top of the fourth on Reed Hero's two-run single. The Red Men added a run in each of the next four innings to expand their lead to 9-3. Carthage tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the ninth to put the game away 13-3.

Austin MacMillan led Elmhurst at the plate in the loss, finishing with three hits. Brandon Kressner, A.J. Compton, Matt Wilson and Jacob McMillan added two hits apiece in the loss.

Jordan Wiegold finished 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs and four runs scored to lead Carthage. Drew Korosic added three hits and scored three runs.
 
Daryl Rivera took the loss for the Bluejays, surrendering eight hits and four earned runs in five innings of work. He walked four and struck out one. Tim Sulik earned the win for Carthage, scattering 12 hits and three earned runs. He walked two and fanned four in 7.1 innings.
 
Elmhurst hosts Augustana College on Monday, April 17.
