WHITTIER, Calif. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-6 road contest at Whittier College in California.
Whittier (6-3), raced out to a quick 3-0 lead, outshooting Elmhurst 15-4 in the opening quarter. Elmhurst (3-6) answered back immediately, scoring the next three goals to pull even midway through the second quarter.
Mike Foytlin scored late in the first quarter and
Jake Cambron followed with a goal early in the second to make it 3-2.
Jake Heil's goal with eight minutes left in the second quarter evened the score at three.
Whittier closed the half on a 3-0 run over the final 5:21. Chris Burley scored on an extra-man advantage and 15 seconds later Cooper Champagne added a goal to give the Poets a 5-3 lead. Burley added his second goal of the game with 3:52 left in the half to make the score 6-3 at the half.
Dan O'Connell scored early in the third quarter to bring Elmhurst back to within two, but the Poets rattled off three straight goals to to close the quarter to extend their lead to five.
Elmhurst came no closer than four goals in the fourth quarter before Whittier closed out the contest with the 11-6 win.
After being outshot 15-4 in the opening quarter, the Bluejays turned the tide for the rest of the Contest,outshooting Whittier 24-21 over the final 45 minutes. Whittier finished the contest with a 36-28 edge in shots and a 35-24 advantage in ground balls. Both teams won exactly 10 faceoffs in the contest.
Cambron led Elmhurst in the contest with three points, finishing with two goals and an assist. Heil, Foytlin, O'Connell and
Mac Harden also finished with goals for Elmhurst.
Nick Bonastia took the loss in goal for Elmhurst despite recording 11 saves.
Burley powered Whittier's offense, finishing with six points on four goals and two assists. Ashton Pieris also added four goals for the Poets. Alex Cramer earned the win in goal while recording 11 saves.
Elmhurst hosts Adrian College on April 1.
