Baseball Team's Rally Falls Short Against Worcester State

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Elmhurst baseball team's rally came up just short in a 6-4 loss to Worcester State at the RussMatt Tournament in Florida.

Elmhurst trailed 4-0 and 6-2 before putting the tying and winning runs on base in the ninth inning. The Bluejays slipped to 5-7 on the season with the loss.

Worcester State (3-5) jumped on the scoreboard quickly with a pair of runs in the first inning. A wild pitch in the third inning gave Worcester State its third run and a Seth Leslie RBI single made it 4-0 in the third.

Elmhurst cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth. The Bluejays loaded the bases with two outs and Ben Havel delivered a two-run single to slice Worcester State's lead down to just two.

The Lancers pushed their lead back to four with two runs in the seventh. Worcester State capitalized on a pair of Elmhurst errors to score two unearned runs. Elmhurst got a run back in the eighth. A.J. Compton walked, took second on a balk, stole third and scored on a Lancer's throwing error to make the score 6-3.

Elmhurst mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth. With one out and the bases empty, Reagan McReynolds was hit by a pitch. Brandon Kressner followed with a single to move McReynolds to third base. A wild pitch allowed McReynolds to score and move Kressner to second base. After a ground out for the second out, Austin MacMillan and Compton were both hit by pitches, loading the bases with two out. The Lancers' Kyle Baker induced a fielders choice groundout to the scoring threat and preserve the game for Worcester State.

Compton recorded three of Elmhurst's seven hits in the loss, finishing 3-for-3 with a run scored. Havel collected Elmhurst's only two RBIs in the contest.

Nathan Tovell made the start and took the loss for the Bluejays. Tovell worked 5.1 innings and allowed nine hits and four earned runs. He walked one while striking out three. Nick Drago finished up in relief, tossing the final 3.2 innings and allowing four hits and two unearned runs. He did not issue a walk while fanning four.

Elmhurst wraps up its spring-break road trip by facing Carleton College on Friday, March 24.
