Baseball Team Splits Two With Wash & Jeff

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Elmhurst baseball team opened their spring break road trip to Florida by splitting a doubleheader with Washington & Jefferson College.

The Bluejays dropped the opener 13-0 before bouncing back with a 7-3 win in game two.

WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 13, ELMHURST 0 (Game One) - Washington and Jefferson banged out nine hits and kept the Bluejays scoreless en route to a 13-0 victory.

The Presidents grabbed a quick 3-0 lead on Mark Merlino's three-run homer in the first inning. The Presidents tacked on three runs in the second three in the sixth and four in the seventh to end the game after seven innings.

Karson Thomas led Elmhurst at the plate with a pair of hits. Daryl Rivera made the start and took the loss, surrendering four hits and six runs in five innings of work. He walked six while striking out nine.

Riley Groves picked up the win for the Presidents, tossing six scoreless innings and allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out nine.

ELMHURST 7, WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 3 (Game Two) - Elmhurst snapped a five-game skid by banging out 12 hits and seven runs in a 7-3 victory.

Trailing 2-0 after two innings, the Bluejays plated three runs in the third to take control of the game. An RBI triple from Reagan McReynolds started the scoring. Brandon Kressner's sacrifice fly scored McReynolds and evened the score at 2-2. Ben Havel cracked solo homer to left field to put the Bluejays in front for good.

Jacob McMillan launched a two-run homer in the fourth to extend Elmhurst's lead to 5-2. Washington and Jefferson scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within two, but an RBI double from McMillan and a run-scoring triple from Christian Ott in the eighth helped the Bluejays put the game out of reach.

McReynolds had the hot bat for the Bluejays in the win, finishing 3-for-5 with a run scored and a run driven in. McMillan added two hits, drove in three and scored two runs. Ott and A.J. Compton added two hits apiece in the Elmhurst win.

Kiko Mari made the start and earned the win for Elmhurst, tossing 5.2 innings and scattering two hits and three earned runs. He walked eight while striking out seven. Nick Drago tossed 3.1 scoreless innings of relief to record the save. Drago allowed just four hits while fanning three.
