CLAYTON, Mo. - The Elmhurst baseball slipped to 2-4 on the season following a doubleheader loss at Fontbonne University.
Elmhurst dropped the opener 10-7 before falling 13-3 in the night cap.
FONTBONNE 10, ELMHURST 7 - Elmhurst had a two-run lead through seven innings, but Fontbonne scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally for the game one win.
The Bluejays trailed 5-1 after five innings, but Elmhurst posted a five-spot in the top of the sixth pull in front. A two-run single from
Austin MacMillan, a two-run homer from
A.J. Compton and an RBI single from
Trey Compton helped spark the Bluejays' five-run sixth inning.
Elmhurst tacked on a run in the seven on MacMillan's bases loaded walk to force in a run, giving Elmhurst a 7-5 lead in the process.
Three singles and walk allowed Fontbonne to tie the score at seven in the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Shocker's three-run single proved to be the game-winning hit to spark the Griffin's rally.
MacMillan sparked Elmhurst's offense, finishing 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs.
A.J. Compton drove in two while
Ben Havel and
Evan Berliner each collected two hits in the loss.
Havel made the start and took a no-decision. He allowed 10 hits and four earned runs in six innings of work. Havel walked three and struck out six.
FONTBONNE 13, ELMHURST 3 - The Bluejays led 3-0, but Fontbonne scored 13 unanswered runs to come away with the 10-run victory.
The Bluejays scored a pair of runs in the third after
Reagan McReynolds singled home a run and
Brandon Kressner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a second run. Elmhurst made it 3-0 in the top of the fourth on
Christian Ott's RBI single.
Fontbonne scored four runs in the fourth to claim a one-run lead. The Griffins added an insurance run in the fifth and then blew the game open in the sixth, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs.
The Bluejays were limited to just three hits in the loss with McReynolds, Ott and
James Wick accounting for the three singles.
Daryl Rivera took the loss for Elmhurst, surrendering four runs and seven hits in four innings of work. He walked two and struck out two.
Elmhurst plays a doubleheader against Washington & Jefferson College at the RussMatt Invitational on March 19.
