Bluejays Fall to Hendrix in OT

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team dropped a tight contest to Hendrix 10-9 in overtime.

Neither team led by more than two throughout the game. The tension built late as the two squads traded goals in a seesaw fourth quarter.

With the Warriors (3-2) leading 7-6 heading into the final period, Elmhurst scored twice to take the lead. Just over a minute into the period, Ty Funderburk found Matt Westhaver in front of the net and the senior buried his seventh goal of the season. With 6:16 to go, Dan O'Connell put the Bluejays ahead 8-7 with his first of the year.

After Hendrix knotted up the score at eight, Mac Harden netted his third of the game to put Elmhurst ahead with 3:13 left. Hendrix's Drew Scanlan tied the game again with less than two minutes to play and the teams headed to overtime.

In the extra session, Elmhurst earned a man-up opportunity, but turned the ball over and Alex Ortenstone finished off a win for the Warriors with a shot from the close right wing.

In the opening period, Funderburk put the Bluejays on the board first off a Jackson Mandli assist. The Bluejays took a 2-0 lead later in the period when Dan Curley netted his first of the season from distance.

The Warriors pulled within one with under a minute to go in the quarter, but Harden extended the lead again with Westhaver providing the key pass. The Warriors went on a 3-1 run to tie the score, but Funderburk found the net with seven seconds left in the period to send Elmhurst ahead by one at the break.

Hendrix scored the first three goals of the third quarter to build its largest lead of the game at 7-5, but Jake Heil pulled Elmhurst within one and set up the back-and-forth finish.

The teams were remarkably even in the matchup, both totaling 23 shots on goal and 16 turnovers. Elmhurst posted a perfect 18-for-18 on clear attempts, while Hendrix finished 16-of-18. Elmhurst held the edge in ground balls (34-31) and face-off wins (13-9). However, the Warriors won the final three face-offs in the contest.

Harden led the Bluejays with three goals, while Funderburk chipped in with a pair. Mandli totaled two assists, while Nick Bonastia took the loss despite 13 saves and eight ground balls.

A trio of Warriors (Matt Latham, Ortenstone, and Jack Gorman) all totaled two goals. Christian Wheeler stopped 14 shots in earning the win.
