ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal halftime deficit to defeat Concordia University (Wis.) 5-4 in overtime.
Dan Curley scored the game-winning goal just 13 seconds into overtime to lead Elmhurst to its first-win in five tries over Concordia.
Elmhurst (3-1) fell into an early 3-0 hole as Concordia (2-1) scored three times in the first 14:03 of the first period to grab a three-goal lead. James Warner, Warren Kaminsky and Aidan Connolly all tallied goals in the opening quarter for Concordia.
Elmhurst cut into the lead at the end of the first quarter as
Matt Westhaver netted his first of three goals to make the score 3-1 after one quarter. Connolly struck for his second goal with 3:54 left in the second quarter to give Concordia a 4-1 lead at the half.
Elmhurst took over in the second half, as Elmhurst shut out the Falcons for the remainder of the game while outshooting Concordia 28-14 in the second half.
Dan Curley netted a goal early in the third quarter to bring the Bluejays to within two. Elmhurst cashed in on an extra-man opportunity late in the quarter as Westhaver stuffed home a pass from
Jackson Mandli to make the score 4-3.
Westhaver completed the hat trick with his third goal of the night midway through the fourth quarter. The Elmhurst senior tied the game at 4-4 after scoring out in front of a
Ty Funderburk assist.
The game headed into overtime even at four and the Bluejays needed just 13 seconds to earn the victory. Rami Ringling won the faceoff to start the extra period and Curley scooped up the loose ball, raced in and beat Concordia keeper Garret Wohlford to give Elmhurst the victory.
The Bluejays finished the contest outshooting Concordia 43-31, including a 29-14 edge after halftime. Westhaver and Curley provided all the offense for the Bluejays. Westhaver finished with three goals while Curley scored a pair. Ringling won 7-of-13 faceoffs for the Bluejays and recorded four ground balls.
Mac Harden picked up six ground balls for the Bluejays.
CJ Galante caused four turnovers while
Eric Langston caused three.
Nick Bonastia earned the win in goal, improving to 3-1 in the process. He recorded 11 saves while allowing just four goals.
Connolly led Concordia in the loss with two goals. Ben Gramarossa won 6-of-12 faceoffs for the Falcons Wholford took the loss in net, allowing five goals while stopping 12 shots.
The Bluejays travel to Alma College on Saturday, March 4.
