KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team led for over half of the contest, but a sluggish second half led to a 75-67 loss at Carthage College.
Elmhurst (5-8, 1-3 CCIW) fell behind early 12-5 before using a 25-11 run to open up a seven-point cushion with six minutes left in the first half. The Bluejays led for the remainder of the half and built a 37-33 cushion at the break.
The Bluejays pushed their lead up to seven points with just 11 minutes left in the contest before the momentum swung towards Carthage (10-3, 4-1 CCIW). The Red Men ripped off a 13-3 run to take a 60-57 lead with eight minutes to play. Elmhurst cut the deficit down to one on a Jalen Loving bucket with 7:30 remaining, but the Red Men responded with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to open up a commanding 12-point lead before putting away the 75-67 win.Â
Elmhurst shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the floor, but just 37.9 percent (8-of-19) from three-point distance. The Bluejays hit 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) of their shots from three-point distance, but struggled from the foul line, converting just 5-of-15 attempts (33.3 percent).
Loving led Elmhurst in the loss with 16 points, shooting 8-of-9 from the floor.
Caleb Mowry added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists while
Derek Dotlich came off the bench to finish with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Jake Rhode finished with nine points while
Marquis Carter and
Nathan Rogers added eight points apiece.Â
Carthage shot 39.4 percent (28-of-66) from the floor in the win, including 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from downtown. Kienan Baltimore came off the bench to score a team-leading 15 points. Drew Joiner added 10 points while Mike Stevenson finished with 11.Â
Elmhurst travels to Millikin University on Wednesday, January 11.Â
