ELMHURST, Ill. –
Sam Johnson's 89th minute goal helped the Bluejays tie with Augustana 1-1.
The Vikings (3-5-1, 0-0-1 CCIW) outshot the Bluejays (5-2-3, 0-0-1 CCIW) 7-3 in the first half and capitalized to score the game's first goal. In the 36th minute, Rahul Bhatia sent a long cross from the right side that Michael Brazinski redirected inside the near post.
In the 63rd minute, Elmhurst was dealt a serious blow when
Andrew Hicks was sent off on a straight red card. After weathering the storm with 10 men, Shonari Phillips also saw red later in the game, putting the Bluejays even with the Vikings at 10 men. In total, five yellow cards and two red cards were issued in the second half.
Elmhurst took the momentum from Augustana's red card and equalized late in the game. After a myriad of chances,
Matt McNamara sent in a long ball that
Lucas Wetherby Jonsson headed back towards the middle.
Sam Johnson found the back of the net to equalize with less than two minutes left in regulation.
The Bluejays outshot the Vikings 5-0 in the second overtime and had a couple of near chances, but the game ended in a tie.
Elmhurst ended up outshooting Augustana 24-14, including 21-7 in the second half and overtime.
Nick King made nine saves and Augustana's Corey Mankins posted eight. Elmhurst's Wetherby Jonsson now has three assists in his last two games.
Elmhurst continues conference play by traveling to Millikin this Saturday, October 1.
