Bluejays Can't Sustain Fast Start Against Carthage

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's lacrosse team scored the first two goals of the game against Carthage, but the Bluejays could not maintain the momentum, falling to the Lady Reds 18-3. 

Elmhurst jumped out to a quick start, scoring the game's first to goals in 4:30. Pheoebe LeRoy struck for the game's first goal with a free position shot less than three minutes into the contest. LeRoy tallied her second goal just 1:30 later to stake Elmhurst to an early 2-0 lead.

Carthage answered back quickly, scoring two goals in the span of 1:30 to even the score at two. The Lady Reds followed with three straight tallies to take a 5-2 lead with 18 minutes remaining in the opening half. LeRoy cut the lead down to two by completing a hat trick with her third goal of the game with 16:29 left. 

Carthage (7-3, 1-0 CCIW) closed the first half with four straight goals to build a 9-3 cushion at halftime. The Lady Reds controlled the action throughout the second half, outshooting the Bluejays 23-2 in the game's final 30 minutes while scoring nine goals in the half to make the final score 18-3.

Carthage finished the contest outshooting Elmhurst (3-6, 0-1 CCIW) 44-13. The Lady Reds had a 32-17 edge in ground balls and an 18-5 advantage in draw controls. Carthage was successful on 13-of-13 clear attempts while the Bluejays completed 15-of-21 clearing opportunities. 

LeRoy finished with all of Elmhurst's offense, scoring all three goals for the Bluejays on six shots. Grace Knoebel kept Elmhurst in the contest early, recording 15 saves, including several point-blank opporutnities for Carthage. 

Elmhurst struggled to contain Carthage's Maddie Griffin. Griffin finished with seven points, scoring a team-best six goals in the contest while also scooping up 11 ground balls and seven draw controls. Marissa Vavra, Kara Vana, Mackenzie Day, Rachel Mussel and Greigh Hoeft added two goals apiece for Carthage. Taylor Sopron made the start in goal for Carthage and earned the win, recording seven saves in over 53 minutes of play.

Elmhurst travels to North Central College on April 13.
