ELMHURST, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan scored 17 runs in the third inning on its way to a 21-7 victory over Elmhurst.
The Bluejays (12-7, 1-2 CCIW) had just tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second before the Titans (9-9, 2-1 CCIW) piled on the runs.
Illinois Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead with a run in each of its first two innings at the plate, but Elmhurst answered in the bottom of the second.
Austin MacMillan and
Matt Wilson both singled to start the inning.
Evan Berliner reached on a fielder's choice when he tried to sacrifice bunt and the third baseman dropped a throw that beat MacMillan to third.
Christian Ott then reached on a fielder's choice that scored MacMillan and caught Berliner out at second on the play.
James Wick plated the second Bluejay run in similar fashion, reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring Wilson.
The Titans sent 21 batters to the plate in the third, scoring 17 runs on 15 hits. The Titans hit three home runs in the inning, one of which was a grand slam, and were aided by two Elmhurst errors.
Now leading 19-2, Illinois Wesleyan scored again in the fourth. The Bluejays tacked on two more in their half of the fourth on a two-RBI single from
Reagan McReynolds. Elmhurst rallied for three more runs in the fifth, making the score 20-7 in favor of the Titans.
Ben Havel led off the inning with a single up the middle and the
A.J. Compton doubled to left field, putting two in scoring position. MacMillan then drilled a single through the right side, scoring Havel and sending Compton to third. Wilson's sacrifice fly to left plated Compton and, after an Even Berliner double, MacMillan scored on a
Christian Ott ground out.
The Titans put the final run on the board in the sixth, making the final score 21-7.
Havel led the Bluejays with three hits, while three others (MacMillan, Wilson, and Ott) had two. McReynolds and Ott both drove in a pair. On the mound, Elmhurst used three pitchers in the third inning, MacMillan allowed nine runs on 11 hits as the Bluejay starter. Conroy faced seven batters in the third before Rivera relieved him. Rivera allowed five runs (two earned) in 3.1 innings, while
Nick Drago finished off the game for the Bluejays with a scoreless seventh.
Adam Glogovsky drove in six runs for Illinois Wesleyan, all in the third inning, with a single and then a grand slam. Jarrod Juskiewicz posted five hits on the day, including a home run, while Matthew Mardis and Pat Mollo also banged round-trippers. Lost in the offensive explosion was a complete game performance from Sean Coonan, who rode the run support to the victory.
Elmhurst hosts Augustana Tuesday, April 5 for a doubleheader that begins at 1:00 p.m.
