Bluejays Settle for Split with Augustana

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst baseball team split another CCIW doubleheader, taking an offensive slugfest 15-9 over Augustana before falling in game two to the Vikings 5-1.

Game One: Elmhurst 15, Augustana 9
Key offensive performances from Trey Compton (three hits, five RBIs), Reagan McReynolds (four hits, four runs scored, two RBIs), and Ben Havel (four hits, three runs scored, one RBI) led the Bluejays to a 15-9 victory.

The Bluejays put up crooked numbers in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to build up a huge lead. Seven of the 11 runs scored with two outs.

With the game tied at one in the third, Even Berliner led off the frame with a walk. Reagan McReynolds then placed a perfect bunt down the third-base line for a single. The, when Brandon Kressner tried to sacrifice the two runners over, Augustana tried to nap McReynolds at second and the throw was late and off target, dribbling into centerfield and allowing Berliner to score. Havel loaded the bases with a single before A.J. Compton notched an RBI single and Austin MacMillan hit a sacrice floy to give Elmhurst a 4-1 advantage.

The Bluejays pulled head 7-1 by banging out six hits and scoring four runs in the fourth. Three straight singles loaded the bases and the RBIs came on singles from Havel (one), Trey Compton (two), and MacMillan (one).

After Augustana answered with four runs in the fifth, but Elmhurst bounced right back to extend its lead again with a two-out rally. A Kressner single scored McReynolds from second. With two on A.J. Compton's base hit to left scored Kressner and then Trey Compton drive in two with a double to deep left.

Augustana outscored the Bluejays 4-2 over the next two frames to pull within five at 14-9, but Elmhurst added one in the eighth and held on for the victory.

All nine Bluejay starters recorded hits in the game and seven of the nine had multi-hit games. Mike Rostine scored a win, tossing six innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits. Chris Eberhart entered the game in the seventh and earned a three-inning save, holding the Vikings' offense scoreless, but allowing two inherited runners to cross the plate.

Augustana's Mike Powers took the loss after 4.1 innings of work. Jeff Prior and Trace Gingerich both recorded a pair of RBIs.

Augustana 5, Elmhurst 1
Despite a brilliant performance from Justin Luzzi, the Bluejays allowed five runs (four unearned) to cross the plate in the eighth as Augustana earned the split.

Reagan McReynolds put Elmhurst on the board in the first, reaching on an infield single, advancing to second on a slow ground ball from Kressner, going to third on an infield single from Havel, and scoring when A.J. Compton reached on a fielder's choice.

The one run was all the Justin Luzzi would need as he held the Augustana bats quiet. Tossing 110 pitches in seven-plus innings, Luzzi entered the eighth inning allowing just four hits and no runs.

Ben Modesitt entered after a leadoff single in the eighth and Augustana rallied from there. John Swiderski's sacrifice bunt moved Nathan Gray to second. Then Gingerich, who had the only extra-base hits against the Bluejays in the game thus far, hit a drive to left that dropped behind the defense and put two runners in scoring position. After a key flyout made it two away with Elmhurst still on top 1-0, a pinch hitter Carter Amundsen tied the game with an RBI single left. The next batter, Tommy Kiriakopoulo hit a hard shot up the middle that was knocked down on a dive by Kressner, but his attempt to shovel the ball to Brett Bayer at second could not get the runner and Gingerich scored the go-ahead run. The next batter, Nick Mosele lined his first home run of the season, a three-run shot down the left-field line that put the Vikings ahead 5-1.

As rain began to fall, Nick Refka locked up his third save of the year, a two-inning outing.

Augustana's Brad Dubow scored the win, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run in the first.

McReynolds and Havel both notched two hits for Elmhurst, while Gingerich led the Vikings with a pair of doubles and scoring the go-ahead runs.

The Bluejays travel to Millikin University for a three-game series this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 p.m.
