Elmhurst Victorious on Senior Day

ELMHURST, Ill. – Phoebe LeRoy and new offensive contributors led the Elmhurst women's lacrosse team to an 18-8 victory over Cornell on Senior Day.

LeRoy led the Bluejay offense once again with a career-high eight goals. Three Bluejays scored for the first time in their careers, including Angie Gasbarre (four goals), Morgan Murray (one), and Jess Benavides (one).

Elmhurst (4-7) jumped out in front early with goals from LeRoy and Gasbarre. After Cornell made it a one-goal game, the Bluejays rattled off four straight goals to take control. The first two came from Gasbarre, her second and third of the year, before LeRoy added another and Ellen Brown put in her first of the game.

Trailing 6-1, the Rams (0-12) tallied two of the next three goals to pull within four, but LeRoy and Brown brought the Elmhurst lead to its largest of the game at 9-3.

With seven minutes to go in the half, an Elmhurst turnover led to a Cornell goal. After a save by Grace Knoebel, Cornell's Sydney Cooper stole the ball and fired into the empty net. That goal sparked a solo 3-0 run for Cooper who brought the Rams within three (9-6) at halftime.

The Bluejays rallied early in the second half, taking control with three goals in less than six minutes. LeRoy took the opening draw control and ran down the field to score just 11 second into the half. Gasbarre and LeRoy both added another tally to put Elmhurst up 12-6 and forced Cornell to call timeout.

Morgan Murray continued the momentum with her first goal of the season. LeRoy made it a 5-0 run in the first 10 minutes of the half with her sixth goal of the game.

Cornell stopped the Bluejay momentum with one tally from Caitlyn St. Marie, but it was not enough as Elmhurst went on to score four of the last five goals to come out victorious 18-8. The run included a senior-to-senior play as Joylnn Alvarez put home her second of the year on an assist from Natalie Tylka.

Elmhurst led in shots (30-26), shots on goal (25-18), and draw controls, while Cornell held a 27-23 edge in ground balls. The Bluejays converted 21-of-24 clears, while the Rams finished 19-of-28.

Grace Knoebel made nine saves in the win, while Cornell's Erin Heflin stopped six Bluejay shots. Cooper scored five goals to lead the Rams.

Elmhurst resumes CCIW play by traveling to Carroll University on April 20.
