JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Six different Bluejays combined for 13 Elmhurst hits and Bluejay pitching stranded 13 runners as the Elmhurst baseball team opened up its 2016 campaign with a 12-9 win over Carleton.
Carleton (0-1) found the board right out of the shoot as Griffin Bolt scored Cody Bohlman on the fielder's choice. Elmhurst (1-0) starter
Ryan Millan avoided further damage by stranding the bases loaded.
The Bluejays took the lead with a three-run, two-out rally in the third inning. With nobody on and two away,
Matt Wilson doubles and
Austin MacMillan walked, which set the stage for
Chris Eberhart's RBI double that scored Wilson and moved MacMillan over to third. A wild pitch gave Elmhurst a 2-1 lead as MacMillan scored and Eberhart advanced to third.
Evan Berliner singled to put the Bluejays ahead by two.
Elmhurst opened up a 5-1 lead with two in the fourth, but Carleton answered with back in the top of the fifth. Berliner scored MacMillan on a sacrifice fly and a McReynolds single plated Eberhart.
Carleton bounced right back with three in the top of the fifth, but Elmhurst answered with four in the bottom of the inning on just one hit. Kressner and Struck scored on a Carleton error and Eberhart knocked in two with a single. The Bluejays added one more in the sixth to lead 10-4.
The Knights battled back with four in the seventh and then scored one in the eighth to pull within one at 10-9. Elmhurst added two more insurance runs in the eighth and held on to take a 12-9 victory.
Nick Drago was awarded the win, pitching two innings, while allowing four runs on four hits.
Ben Modesitt earned the save with 2.1 innings of one-run ball, including three strikeouts. Elmhurst starter
Ryan Millan pitched 4.2 innings and allowed four runs, while walking five and striking out four.
Eberhart led the Bluejays with four hits and three RBIs, while Berliner and MacMilan knocked in two apiece.
Ben Havel added three hits, while McReynolds recorded two hits and three RBIs.
Carleton's Sean Kelly took the loss after pitching five innings and allowing nine runs (five earned). Griffin Bolte knocked in four runs on four hits to lead the Knights' offense.
The Bluejays start a doubleheader with Lawrence University tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. in Jacksonville, Ill.
