ELMHURST, Ill. – A balanced offensive attack and a big first quarter led the Elmhurst men's lacrosse team to a 9-6 victory over Hope.
In the Bluejays' first win of the season,
Matt Westhaver and
David Fracassa both scored twice, while
Mac Harden,
Jake Cambron,
Jackson Mandli,
Mal Euson, and
Nick Klenck all tallied one goal.
The Bluejays came out of the gates hot, scoring four of the five first-quarter goals. Gunnar Elder had a hand in both of the Flying Dutch's first-half tallies, scoring in the first quarter and assisting on Matthew Harkema's second-quarter goal. After being held scoreless in the second quarter, the Bluejays went into the locker room with a 4-2 lead.
Westhaver scored just 30 minutes into the second half to extend the Elmhurst lead, but Hope's Parker Osterink answered. The two teams continued to trade goals for the rest of the game with Elmhurst finishing off a 9-6 victory.
Nick Bonastia made eight saves in earning his first win of the season. Klenck and Harden added assists to their goals, while
Dan Curley and Klenck scooped up a game-high five ground balls.
Elmhurst outshot Hope 38-21 and turned over Hope 19 times, while only committing. The Bluejays also led in ground balls (31-22) and face-offs (10-8). Both teams were solid in clears as Hope converted 14-of-15 and Elmhurst finished 14-16.
David Grant Brogan led the Hope offense with two goals, while five other players combined for the remaining five. Joey Williams made eight saves in the loss.
Elmhurst takes a 1-3 record into its extended road swing. The Bluejays take on Concordia (Wis.) in Mequon, Wis. on March 12 at 1:00 p.m.
