MEQUON, Wis. – The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team led by one at the halftime, but seven third-quarter goals and an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Garrett Wohlford led Concordia Wisconsin past the Bluejays 12-6.
The Falcons (3-1) made a couple of first-half runs, but the Bluejays (1-4) answered each one.
Matt WesthaverConcordia quickly pulled head by two with goals from Mark Wilson and Matt Garvey in the first four minutes. The Bluejays needed only three minute to pull even as
Matt Westhaver and
Mal Euson found the net off assists from
Jake Cambron and Westhaver respectively.
The two teams traded goals in less than a minute to tie the score at three. Garvey scored his second, while
Mac Harden put himself in the Elmhurst scorebook with an unassisted tally.
After nearly 15 minutes of scoreless action,
Jackson Mandli gave Elmhurst a lead with the only second-quarter goal of the game, sending the Bluejays to the locker room with a 4-3 advantage.
Elmhurst outshot Concordia 21-11 in the first half, including a 14-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Bluejays also led the turnover battle 10-6, but Concordia's Wolhford made ten saves to keep the Falcons close.
Concordia came out firing in the opening portions of the second half, scoring three goals in five minutes to take a 6-4 lead. Westhaver put home his second goal of the game to bring Elmhurst within one, but Concordia scored four more times in the third quarter to pull away and lead 10-5 after 45 minutes.
Despite being outshot 11-4 in the fourth quarter, the Falcons netted the first two goals and Elmhurst couldn't convert until
David Fracassa scored in the final seconds to make the final score 12-6.
Wohlford finished the game with 18 saves, while
Nick Bonastia made seven for Elmhurst.
Matt Westhaver led the Bluejay attack with two goals and one assist. Garvey scored a game-high five goals for the Falcons.
Elmhurst converted all 19 of its clear attempts in the game, while outshooting Concordia 35-28 (24-18 shots on goal). Elmhurst forced more turnovers (19-13), while Concordia scooped up more ground balls (29-21). The Falcons also held a 14-8 edge in face offs, while nether team converted on a man-up opportunity.
Elmhurst travels to Beloit College this Wednesday, March 16 for a 5:00 p.m. matchup.
