Bluejays Defeat Concordia-Chicago in Season Opener

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst women's lacrosse team rolled to its first win of the 2016 campaign, defeating Concordia-Chicago 15-2. 

Meghan Keyes led the Bluejays (1-0) with four goals, while Phoebe LeRoy, Ellen Brown, and Natalie Tylka also chipped in offensively with three each in a rout of the Cougars (0-2). 

The Bluejays pulled ahead from the get-go with two goals in just over two minutes. LeRoy started right where she left off last season, when she led the Bluejays with 39 goals, scoring the first goal of Elmhurst's 2016 campaign. Krystyna Kotlinski then tallied her first goal of the season, off an assist from Keyes, to put Elmhurst up 2-0. 

Keyes then combined with Tylka to score the next four goals to put Elmhurst up 6-0. The Bluejays continued to extend their lead with goals from LeRoy, Brown, Jolynn Alvarez, and Tylka. 

Concordia's Margaret Doane scored the final goal of the half to chip into the deficit, but Elmhurst headed into the locker room with a 10-1 advantage. In the first half, Elmhurst outshot the Cougars 17-3, while holding the advantage in draw controls (12-0) and turnovers (10-9). 

The two teams traded the first two goals of the second half. LeRoy put home her third of the game, while Sonja Sorenson scored for the Cougars. Elmhurst scored the next four goals to complete its 15-2 victory. 

Six different Bluejays combined for their 15 goals with Keyes, LeRoy, Brown, and Tylka leading the way. Keyes and LeRoy also tied for the team-lead in assists with two. Grace Knoebel made four saves, while allowing just two goals. 

Doane and Sorensen combined for the two Cougar goals, while Melissa Franco made seven saves for Concordia. 

Elmhurst held a 26-6 edge in shots, while also leading in ground balls (18-10) and draw controls (17-2). 

The Bluejays begin an extended road swing with a matchup against Albion College this Saturday, March 5 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern time.
