Women's Lacrosse Team Fades in Second Half

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - After a promising start, the Elmhurst women's lacrosse team faded in the second half in a 21-5 road loss at John Carroll University.

Elmhurst (1-2) struck first, scoring less than 90 seconds into the contest on a Phoebe LeRoy goal. 

John Carroll (3-1) answeed back with three goals in the span of 1:17, including a pair from Jillian Millard, to take a 3-1 lead. The Bluejays had a response, cutting the lead in half on a goal from Ellen Brown and evening the score at three after LeRoy's second goal of the game with 20:46 remaining.

The Blue Streaks went back in front after a goal from Alexis Guage, but the Bluejays answered back once again as LeRoy completed a hat trick with her third goal of the contest with 18:18 remaining. 

John Carroll took control over the next 12 minutes, scoring four straight goals to open up an 8-4 lead. The Bluejays cut the deficit down to three with 2:44 left in the half following a Meghan Keyes goal from free position. The Blue Streaks' Brooke McQuinn made it 9-5 in favor of John Carroll at halftime, scoring with just one second left in the opening half. 

John Carroll dominated the second half, scoring six times in the first four minutes of play to take a commanding 15-5 lead. The Blue Streaks added six additional goals to pull away for the 21-5 victory.

The Blue Streaks outshot Elmhurst 38-11, including a 20-5 advantage in the second half. John Carroll also had a 36-19 edge in ground balls and completed 16-of-19 clear attempts. The Bluejays managed just 11-of-23 clear attempts. 

LeRoy led the Bluejays in the loss, scoring three goals and registering a pair of ground ball pickups. Keyes finished with one goal, an asist and two groundballs while Brown also recorded a goal. Grace Knoebel totaled seven saves in net for the Bluejays.

Millard paced John Carroll with four goals and an assist. Grace Curatolo added three goals and four assists while Meghan Harte also registered three goals. Caroline Smith played the first half in goal and registered the win despite not making a save. Mara McCormick stopped four shots in the second half.

Elmhurst travels to St. Mary's College (Ind.) on March 22.
