Bluejays Hold Off Big Blue For 10th Straight Win

DECATUR, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team recorded its 10th straight victory with a 73-65 road win over Millikin University.

Elmhurst, ranked fifth in the latest D3hoops.com poll, upped its record to 13-1 overall and remained perfect in CCIW play at 3-0.

Elmhurst and Millikin traded leads for the first seven minutes of play, before a Peyton Wyatt three-pointer put the Bluejays in front 17-14. The Bluejays slowly added to their lead, using a 14-5 run over the next seven minutes to take a 31-19 lead after a Will Nixon jumper. The Bluejays led by as many as 13 points in the half and carried a 41-31 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Bluejays led by 13 early in the second half before Millikin (6-8, 0-3 CCIW) mounted a strong rally. The Big Blue used a 13-3 run over the next five minutes to close to within three points midway through the half. Elmhurst responded with a 12-4 run over the next five minutes to push its lead back to 11 points after a bucket from Nixon.

The Bluejays held a 10-point lead with 1:16 left before Millikin made one final push. The Big Blue used a 7-2 run over the next 45 seconds to close to within five (70-65) with 30 seconds left. The Bluejays hit 3-of-4 free throws in the game's final seconds to preserve the victory.

Elmhurst finished the contest shooting 48.0 percent (24-of-50) from the floor, including 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Millikin 30-22.

After not hoisting a shoot in the Bluejays' win over Augustana on Wednesday night, Wyatt came off the bench to score a season-high 16 points and lead the Bluejays in the win. Wyatt hit 5-of-8 shots from the floor, including 3-of-6 from downtown. Kyle Wuest finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists while Nixon totaled 10 points and six boards. Pat Coleman added nine points and Kenny Payonk came off the bench to score eight. Jalen Loving pulled down a game-high seven rebounds to go with five points.

Millikin shot 49.0 percent (24-of-49) from the field, including 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from downtown. Jack Simpson led the Big Blue in the loss, scoring a game-high 23 points while shooting 9-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Leighton Lark came off the bench to score 13 points while TJ Griffin added 12 points and three assists.
