KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team scored a 78-58 road win at Carthage College to record its 11th consecutive victory.
Elmhurst, ranked second in the latest
D3hoops.com poll, scored the game's first five points and never trailed in the contest. The win upped the Bluejays' record to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in the CCIW. It marks the first time the Bluejays have started 4-0 in league play since the 2006-07 season.
Carthage (7-8, 1-3 CCIW) tied the game at 12-12 eight minutes into the opening half, but the Bluejays responded with a 13-0 run over the next 3:30. The run was fueled by five points from
Eric Leonard and a pair of buckets from
Jalen Loving.
Elmhurst continued to pull away in the half, building a 20-point lead with 1:35 left after Leonard hit a layup. A three-pointer by Carthage's Tony Pierce Jr. cut Elmhurst's lead to 42-25 at the half.
The Bluejays never allowed Carthage to get any closer that a 14-point deficit in the second half. The Redmen closed to 14 with 10:33 left to play, but a 10-0 run over the next three minutes helped Elmhurst put the game out of reach as the Bluejays' built a 24-point cushion and cruised to the 20-point victory.
Elmhurst shot an even 50.0 percent (29-of-58) from the floor, and hit 41.7 percent (10-of-24) of its three-point attempts. The Bluejays continued their dominant play on the glass, outrebounding Carthage by 10 (40-30). The Bluejays also made Carthage pay for its mistakes, scoring 21 points of the Redmen's 17 turnovers.
Kyle Wuest led a balanced scoring attack for the Bluejays, finishing with 14 points, shooting 3-of-5 from three-point distance. He added seven rebounds to finish as the team's co-leader. Leonard came off the bench to score 13, hitting 5-of-8 shots in the victory while dishing out a team-leading four assists.
Erik Crittenden and
Will Nixon finished with nine points apiece. Nixon collected seven rebounds while Crittenden pulled down six.
Peyton Wyatt added seven points while
Kenny Payonk and Loving scored six points apiece. Eleven different Bluejays put points on the scoreboard in the victory.
Carthage struggled with its shooting, hitting just 31.4 percent (16-of-51) of its shots. The Redmen hit 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from beyond the arc in the loss. Jordan Kedrowski led Carthage in the loss, scoring a game-high 21 points while shooting 6-of-12 from the floor. Sean Valentine came off the bench to score 10. Pierce, the Redmen's leading scorer, was limited to just three points while shooting 1-of-6 from the floor.
Elmhurst looks for its 12th straight win on Saturday, January 16, when the Bluejays travel to Wheaton College for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
