WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team recorded its 12th straight victory with a 71-46 win over Wheaton College.
Elmhurst, ranked second in the latest D3hoops.com poll, used a strong second half to pull away for the victory. After a close first half, the Bluejays out scored Wheaton 39-19 in the second half en route to the win.
The Bluejays led 32-27 at the half but blew things open in the second, outscoring Wheaton (4-12, 0-5 CCIW) 25-5 over the first 10 minutes of the half, establishing a 25-point lead and putting the game out of reach. Elmhurst (15-1, 5-0 CCIW) led for over 37 minutes of play in the win.
Elmhurst shot 35.9 percent from the floor hitting 23-of-64 attempts. Wheaton managed just 21.3 percent shooting, hitting 13-of-61 shots. The Thunder were ice cold in the second half, shooting just 16.7 percent from the field, making just 5-of-30 shots. Wheaton struggled all contest from long range, hitting just 3-of-21 attempts (14.3 percent) from three-point range.Â
Elmhurst was once again dominant on the glass,outrebounding Wheaton 53-42. The 53 rebounds is the seventh-highest single-game total in Elmhurst history.Â
Twelve different Bluejays put points on the scoreboard in the win.
Will Nixon led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds while
Bryant Ackerman and
Jalen Loving added 10 points apiece.
Jonathan Berntsen scored 14 points to pace Wheaton while Trae Masten scored nine.
Elmhurst hosts North Park on Wednesday, January 20, at 7:00 pm.
