ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team remained unbeaten on the young season after erasing a two-set deficit and rallying past Saint Mary's College (Ind.) for a 23-25, 25-27, 25-15, 25-23, 15-4 victory.
Elmhurst raced out to a quick 10-3 lead in the opening set, but Saint Mary's used a 7-2 run midway through the set to grab a 19-18 lead. With the score tied 21-all, the Belles won four of the next six points to take the opening set.Â
Elmhurst once again built a lead in the second set, opening up a five-point cushion at 10-5. The Bluejays led 24-21, but the Belles' answered back, fighting off three set points before taking the second set at 27-25.Â
The Bluejays surged in front quickly in the third set, building a 10-4 lead before opening up a 20-11 cushion. A kill from
Peggy Clemens put the set away for the Bluejays.
The two squads traded points for most of the fourth set with neither team leading by more than three points. Saint Mary's opened up a 23-21 lead, but a kill from
Olivia Parks and three straight blocks from
Mary Lawrence and
Hannah Nimrick gave Elmhurst the set at 25-23.
The Bluejays dominated the decisive fifth set, ripping of nine of the first 10 points to grab a 9-1 lead. A kill from
Alli Rogers sealed the match for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst hit .233 for the match with 67 kills and 25 errors in 180 attempts. Rogers, Lawrence and
Mel Lundin each reached double figures in kills to pace the Bluejays' offense. Rogers led the way with 16 kills and four blocks while Lawrence totaled a double-double with 12 kills and 12 blocks. Lundin pounded down 10 kills in the victory. Nimrick totaled eight kills, 40 assists, 10 digs and five blocks in the victory. Parks and
Alyssa Olson totaled six kills apiece for the Bluejays.
Amy Schryver and
Peggy Clemens totaled 13 digs apiece in the win.
Saint Mary's hit .128 for the match with 50 kills and 29 errors in 164 attempts. Katie Hecklinski and Meaghan Gibbons tallied 15 kills apiece to lead the Belles in the loss.
Elmhurst closes out its own tournament by taking on Edgewood College at 2:00 p.m.Â
