Bluejays Wrap Tournament With Perfect Record

ELMHURST, Ill. - The 19th-ranked Elmhurst volleyball team closed the book on its own invitational by sweeping Edgewood College in three sets to finish with a perfect 4-0 record.

Elmhurst dispatched the Eagles in three sets, winning 26-24, 25-22, 25-22. 

The Bluejays built an early lead in the opening set, leading 19-14. Edgewood responded with a an 8-2 run to surge in front at 22-21. A kill from Alyssa Olson brought the Bluejays even at 22-22. A block from Olivia Parks and Mary Lawrence put the Bluejays back in front and Amy Schryer followed with an ace to give the Bluejays set point. Edgewood scored two straight points to pull even at 24-all, but back-to-back errors on the Eagles gave the Bluejays the set at 26-24. 

The two squads traded points for much of the second set with neither team leading by more than three points. The score was deadlocked at 22-22 before a kill from Lawrence put Elmhurst up by a point. A block from Olson and Alli Rogers, followed by a kill from Peggy Clemens gave the Bluejays the second set at 25-22.

Elmhurst raced out to an early 12-5 lead in the third, forcing Edgewood to burn both of its timeouts. Elmhurst led by six at 22-16, but Edgewood used a 5-1 run to close to within two points at 23-21. A service error on Edgewood and a block from Shannon Burns and Lawrence sealed the win for the Bluejays.

Elmhurst hit .194 for the match with 37 kills and 17 errors in 103 attacks. Lawrence led teh charge for the Bluejays with a team-high 10 kills and four blocks. Hannah Nimrick added eight kills, 22 assists and eight digs. Rogers finished with seven kills for the Bluejays while Schryver totaled a team-leading 15 digs. 

Edgewood finished the contest hitting .162 with 35 kills and 18 errors in 105 swings. Emily Chaussee tallied nine kills and eight digs to pace the Eagles. Savannah Koester added eight kills while hitting .438.

Elmhurst travels to the Washington University in St. Louis Tournament next weekend (September 11-12).
