Bluejay Volleyball Team Topples UMass-Boston

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team closed out the first day of its own tournament with a perfect 2-0 record after defeating UMass-Boston 25-21, 25-22, 25-15 in the night cap.

Elmhurst built early leads in the first two sets before fending of a late charge from UMass-Boston. In the opening set, Elmhurst turned a 5-5 tie into a 16-9 lead with an 11-4 run. The Beacons answered back, closing to within a point at 20-19 before a pair of kills and an ace from Mary Lawrence helped the Bluejays put the first set away 25-21.

Elmhurst led 10-8 early in the second set and built a 24-17 lead, but the Beacons fought off five set points from Elmhurst to pull to within two points. An Alli Rogers' kill gave the second set to the Bluejays at 25-22.

The Bluejays started quickly in the third and never looked back. The team built an 11-4 lead after the first 15 points. Leading 19-15 late in the set, Elmhurst won the final six points to put the match away.

The Bluejays hit .130 as a team with 37 kills and 22 errors in 115 attempts. Rogers powered the attack with a team-leading nine kills. Hannah Nimrick added seven kills, 26 assists and 13 digs while Mel Lundin finished with seven kills. Lawrence added six kills for the Bluejays while Amy Schryver totaled team-highs in both digs (14) and service aces (four).

UMass-Boston hit .033 as a squad with 20 kills and 17 errors in 92 attempts. Julia Murphy and Colleen Koen totaled five kills apiece for the Beacons.

Elmhurst hosts Saint Mary's College (10:00 a.m.) and Edgewood College (2:00 p.m.) tomorrow.
