ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team opened its 2015 season by making short work of Lawrence University. Elmhurst dispatched the Vikings in three sets, winning 25-12, 25-15, 25-13 in the first match of the Elmhurst College Invitational.
The Bluejays scored the first two points of the opening set and never trailed, building a 15-3 cushion after a kill from
Mel Lundin. The Bluejays put the set away at 25-12 after another kill from Lundin.
Elmhurst trailed 4-3 early in the second set, before scoring eight of the next nine points to take a 10-5 lead. Leading 15-9, Elmhurst closed the set on a 10-6 run to take a two-set cushion.
The third set was even at five after the first 10 points, but Elmhurst responded with a 13-1 run to build a commanding 18-6 cushion. A
Hannah Nimrick kill sealed the set and the match for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst hit .297 for the match with 43 kills and 13 errors in 101 attempts. Lawrence finished the contest with a -.068 attack percentage after totaling 15 kills and 20 errors in 73 attempts.
Alli Rogers powered the Bluejays' offense, totaling 12 kills while hitting .308.
Mary Lawrence added seven kills and three blocks while Nimrick totaled six kills, six digs and a team-leading 28 assists.
Shannon Burns,
Olivia Parks and Lundin finished with four kills apiece.
Amy Schryver led the squad in digs with 10.
Rachael Wuensch and Arianna Neumeyer totaled four kills apiece for Lawrence.
Elmhurst takes on UMass-Boston in its second game of the Elmhurst Invitational tonight at 7:00 p.m.
