ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Elmhurst volleyball team wrapped up the Washington University in St. Louis Tournament with a 3-1 record by defeating Buena Vista University in three sets.
Elmhurst finished the tournament with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 victory, improving to 7-1 on the season in the process.
Hannah NimrickElmhurst, ranked 14th in the latest AVCA Division III national poll, struggled out of the gate in the opening set, falling behind 13-8, but the Bluejays closed the set on a 17-4 run to take the opening set 25-17.
The two squads traded points for much of the second set before with neither team leading by more than three points and the score deadlocked at 19-19. Elmhurst pulled in front at 22-21 and then used kills from
Mary Lawrence and
Alli Rogers to generate three set points. Buena Vista fought off two points before a kill from
Hannah Nimrick gave the Bluejays the second set.
Elmhurst stepped on the gas early in the third set, scoring the first six points and and never trailing. Beuna Vista came as close as two points at 12-10, but the Bluejays slowly pulled away before a kill from Nimrick gave the Bluejays the set and the match.
Elmhurst hit .316 for the match with 40 kills and nine errors in 98 chances. Nimrick continued her strong play, finishing one dig shy of her fourth consecutive triple-double. She totaled a team-leading 10 kills and 26 assists while adding nine digs in the win. She was named to the all-tournament team for her play over the two-day tournament.
Lawrence added nine kills and four blocks for the Bluejays while
Olivia Parks totaled six kills and four blocks.
Mel Lundin and Rogers added five kills apiece while
Alyssa Olson tallied three kills and a team-best six blocks.
Amy Schryver led the squad in digs with 16.
Buena Vista finished the match hitting .137 with 35 kills and 21 errors in 102 swings. Jade Schaap led the way for the Beavers, talling 13 kills in the loss. Maddie Bardole added nine kills and nine digs in the loss.
