Dailey & Euson Help Bluejays Hold Off Beloit 8-7

ELMHURST, Ill. - Mal Euson and Tyler Dailey scored three goals apiece and the Elmhurst men's lacrosse team held off a fourth quarter surge to score an 8-7 win over Beloit College.

Elmhurst (1-1) built a five-goal cushion at 8-3 and then held off a late rally as Beloit scored four times over the final 16 minutes of the contest.

Euson put the Bluejays on the scoreboard first with a goal less than six minutes into the contest. The lead did not last as Beloit's Matt Kelly took advantage of a man-up opportunity and scored 90 seconds later to even the score. Tyler Dailey put Elmhurst back in front near the end of the first quarter, scoring off a Jacob Cambron feed.

Elmhurst added a pair of goals early in the second quarter as Alex Opyd scored off Cambron's second assist of the game. Euson followed with his second goal of the game off a Nick Klenck assist. 

Beloit score two goals just 1:15 apart to pull to within one. Nick Meisberger scored off an Aidan Whinnery assist with 3:10 left. Whinnery took advantage of a two-man advantage to score his first goal of the game with 1:55 left. Dailey netted his second goal of the game with just 27 seconds left to extend Elmhurst's lead to 5-3 at halftime.

The Bluejays had a strong start to the third quarter, scoring three straight goals. Klenck connected on a feed from Dailey just 1:48 into the half. Dailey and Euson each tallied their third goal of the game later in the quarter to put Elmhurst in front 8-3.

Whinnery scored with just 1:00 minute left in the third to bring the Bucaneers to within four goals after three quarters. Kelly scored early in the fourth to slice the Bluejays' lead down to two. Whinnery scored on a man-advantage with 4:17 left and then added his fourth goal of the game just 26 seconds later to bring Elmhurst's lead down to one.

Nick Bonastia recorded a pair of saves on Beloit's next possesion to keep the Bluejays up by one. A pair of penalties on Beloit in the final 1:34 helped the Bluejays wind down the rest of the clock and earn the victory.

Elmhurst outshot Beloit (0-2) 35-25 and had a 32-29 edge on ground balls. The Bluejays converted 17-of-18 clears while Beloit was successful on 17-of-22 attempts. 

The Bluejays struggled with a man-advantage, finishing 0-for-7 on the day. Beloit tallied goals on three of five extra-man opportunities.

Dailey totaled three goals and an assist to pace the Bluejays' attack while Euson netted three goals in the win. Klenck and Opyd tallied two points apiece on a goal and an assist. Brandon Bethran registered six ground balls while winning 5-of-9 faceoffs. 

Bonastia earned the win in net for Elmhurst, allowing seven goals while recording 13 saves. He tallied eight saves in the fourth quarter when Beloit outshot the Bluejays 13-5. 

Whinnery led Beloit with five points, tallying four goals and an assist. Kelly finished with three points on two goals and an assist. Zach Carner and Nick Yielding totaled seven ground balls apiece in the loss. 

Trevor Kenahan took the loss in net, allowing eight goals while recording 12 saves.

Elmhurst hosts Concordia University (Wis.) on Wednesday, March 11, at 4:00 p.m.
