Baseball Team Swept by Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to 24th-ranked Augustana College. Elmhurst was shutout 11-0 in the opener before falling 15-2 in game two.

Elmhurst fell to 5-11 overall and 0-5 in the CCIW following the losses.

AUGUSTANA 11, ELMHURST 0 (Game One) - Augustana's Kevin Hodgman limited Elmhurst to only four hits while tossing a seven-inning 11-0 shutout in game one.

The Vikings scored early and often, scoring in each of the first five innings to race out to an 11-0 lead.

Augustana banged out 15 hits in just six innings. Danny Fifer led the way for the Vikings by finishing a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBIs. John Swiderski added two hits and drove in three while Jeff Prior collected three hits and two RBIs.

Zach Tsiodras collected two of Elmhurst's four hits in the loss.

Ryan Millan suffered the loss for Elmhurst, surrendering 14 hits and eight earned runs in four innings of work. He walked two and struck out two.

Hodgman scattered four hits while tossing the shutout for the Vikings. He fanned seven while not issuing a walk.

AUGUSTANA 15, ELMHURST 2 (Game Two) -,Augustana finished the doubleheader sweep with a 15-2 victory in game two.

Augustana's bats remained hot in game two, banging out 19 hits while scoring 15 runs. The Vikings plated five runs over the first three innings to take an early lead before Elmhurst jumped on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Reagan McReynolds doubled home a run and then stole third before scoring on a wild pitch.

Augustana answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth before breaking the game open with an eight-run sixth inning. The Vikings sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth with Fifer delivering the big blow with a bases-clearing, three-run triple.

McReynolds finished with two of Elmhurst's six hits and recorded the team's lone RBI.

Fifer remained red-hot for the Vikings, posting a 4-for-4 day with four RBI and two runs scored. Trace Gingerich added three hits and three runs while Klye Lenihan and Prior each drove in two runs in the victory.

Ivan Nevarez made the start and took the loss for the Bluejays. He allowed 11 hits and seven earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. He walked three while striking out two. Gerrit Elzinga picked up the win for Augustana, tossing five innings and allowing four hits and two runs. He walked four while striking out eight.

Elmhurst travels to Eureka College on Wednesday, April 1.
