ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Alex Opyd scored a record-setting nine goals while leading the Elmhurst men's lacrosse team to a 27-7 blowout win over Fontbonne.

Alex OpydOpyd set a pair of Elmhurst records in the victory, establishing a new single-game mark for goals (nine) and total points (10).
Elmhurst (3-5) snapped a four-game slide with the victory and set new single-game team records for goals (27), shots (63) and faceoff victories (27), bettering each of the previous marks that were established earlier this season against Carroll, by one.Â
Elmhurst scored early and often, peppering the Fontbonne net with 20 shots in the opening quarter. Opyd scored just 2:18 into the contest to put the Bluejays in front 1-0.
Jackson Mandli and
Matt Westhaver followed with goals before Opyd collected his second of the period with 8:14 left. Westhaver fired home his second goal of the contest just 26 seconds later to stake the Bluejays to a quick 5-0 lead.Â
Fontbonne got on the scoreboard on a Joey Mirth goal, but the Bluejays scored the next five goals, with Opyd and Westhaver collecting two apiece, to race out to a 10-1 lead. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the half with the Bluejays owning a 13-4 lead at the break.
Elmhurst outscored Fontbonne 8-1 in the third quarter to build a 21-5 lead.

The Bluejays continued their offensive display in the fourth quarter, outscoring Fontbonne 6-2 while pulling away for the 27-7 victory.
Elmhurst outshot Fontbonne 63-19 in the contest and registered double-digit shots in all four quarters. The Bluejays owned a 52-21 edge in ground balls and also won 27-of-36 faceoffs. After struggling to take advantage on extra-man opportunities through the first seven games of the season, Elmhurst cashed in on Fontbonne's mistakes, scoring eight goals in 13 extra-man opportunities.
Opyd led Elmhurst in the victory, finishing with nine goals and one assist to total 10 points. Westhaver, Euson and Klenck totaled four goals apiece in the victory. Klenck finished with eight points on four goals and four assists while also recording four ground balls. Westhaver finished with four ground balls to go with his four goals. Euson totaled five points on four goals and an assist. Curley totaled two goals and an assist to finish with three points while picking up a team-leading 11 ground balls in the win.
Tyler Dailey also finished with three points with a goal and two assists.
Brandon Bethran (one goal , one assist), Jacob Cambron (one goal, one assist), and Mandli (one goal, one assist) each finished with two points in the win. Bethran won 23-of-32 faceoffs and otaled six ground balls.
Joe Kovachevich caused five turnovers and tallied four ground balls in the win.
Nick Bonastia earned the win in goal, playing three quarters and totaling five saves. Jack Acevedo played the fourth quarter and totaled two saves while allowing two goals.
Mirth led Fontbonne (0-9) in the loss by finishing with six points on three goals and three assists. Ben Nguyen added two goals for the Griffins. Seth Yance took the loss in net, allowing 27 goals while recording 12 saves.
