Men's Lacrosse Team Drops Tight Contest at Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team's fourth quarter rally came up one goal short in a 6-5 road loss at Transylvania University.

Elmhurst (2-5) led 2-1 at the break, but the Bluejays were done in by a poor start to the second half.,Transylvania scored five straight times to open the second half, turning a one-goal deficit into a 6-2 lead.

Elmhurst struck first as Jackson Mandli scored just 3:17 into the contest to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead after the first quarter. Transylvania evened the score at 1-1 midway through the second half on a Robert Rhea goal, but Elmhurst regained the lead just 15 seconds later as Dan Curley scored to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead at the break.

Transylvania scored four times in the first six minutes of the third quarter to take a quick 5-2 lead. The Pioneers' Clay Douthat scored early in the fourth quarter to give Transylvania a four-goal cushion.

Elmhurst mounted a furious rally over the final nine minutes of the contest. Matt Westhaver scored with 8:36 left to pull Elmhurst to within three. Alex Opyd added an extra-man goal just 90 seconds later to cut the deficit down to two. Opyd scored again with 25 seconds left to bring the Bluejays to within one, but the Bluejays could not score the equalizer in the final seconds.

Elmhurst outshot Transylvania 40-35 but Transylvania had a 23-20 edge on ground balls and won 8-of-14 faceoffs.

Opyd led Elmhurst's offense in the loss with two goals. Westhaver, Curley and Mandli each scored a goal while Kalani Flowers tallied an assist. Nick Bonastia took the loss in net, recording 10 saves while allowing six goals.

Clark Watts totaled three points to lead Transylvania in the win. Watts scored a pair of goals while also recording an assist. Douthat and Andrew Meyer finished with a goal and assist apiece.

Elmhurst travels to Fontbonne University tomorrow (March 26).
