Men's Hoops Team Holds Off Buena Vista in Double OT

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Elmhurst men's basketball team picked up its sixth consecutive victory in a thrilling 125-115 double overtime win at Buena Vista University.

Elmhurst, ranked sixth in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, led for nearly the entire duration of regulation. The Bluejays scored the game's opening bucket and never trailed in the first 40 minutes of action. Elmhurst led by as many as nine points and carried a 45-40 lead into the locker room at the half. 

Elmhurst (9-1) built a quick 12-point lead early in the second half before Buena Vista (4-5) surged back, pulling even at 65-all with 11:43 left. The Bluejays quickly pushed their lead back to eight points and led 94-87 with 3:32 left after a Bryant Ackerman layup. 

The Beavers rattled off seven straight points to knot the score at 94-94, but an Erik Crittenden layup with 1:26 left put Elmhurst back in front. A pair of Nick Clark free throws tied the game for Buena Vista with 23 seconds left. Elmhurst's jumper near the end of regulation was no good, forcing the game into overtime.

Elmhurst grabbed a quick lead in the first overtime, but a three-pointer from Kennedy Drey gave Buena Vista its first lead of the game with 2:41 left. The two teams traded buckets and lead over the next two minutes with Elmhurst grabbing a 106-105 lead after a pair of free throws from Erik Crittenden. After a Buena Vista miss, Crittenden hit a layup with 10 seconds left to give Elmhurst a three-point lead. Drey forced the game into a second overtime as he beat the buzzer to drain a game-tying three pointer. 

Elmhurst took control in the second overtime, scoring the first eight points to take a 116-108 lead with 2:40 left. The Bluejays pushed their lead up to 11 points before holding on for the 10-point victory.

The Bluejays finished the contest shooting 49.4 percent (39-of-79) from the floor. including 38.3 percent (11-of-28) from the foul line. Elmhurst was solid from the free throw line, hitting 81.8 percent (36-of-44) of its shots. 

Elmhurst's starting five accounted for the bulk of the team's points. Ackerman, Crittenden, Will Nixon, Kyle Wuest and Eric Leonard combined for 103 of the team's 135 points. Wuest led the charge, pouring in a season-high 31 points, shooting 9-of-17 from the floor and 11-of-13 from the free throw line. He added a team-leading eight assists in the victory. Crittenden added a double-double totaling 24 points and 11 rebounds. Leonard scored a career-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds and five assits. Ackerman added 14 points while Nixon totaled 12 points and nine rebounds. Nixon also blocked a pair of shots in the victory, giving him 109 for his career, tying Elmhurst's career record set by Brent Ruch (2005-09). 

Buena Vista shot an identical 49.4 percent (40-of-71) from the floor and hit 33.3 percent (12-of-36) from downtown. Clark paced the Beavers in the loss, scoring a game-high 36 points, shooting 11-of-27 from the floor, including 6-of-18 from three-point range. Clark added a game-high 14 assists to record a double-double. Drey added a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds while Sean Morgan scored 11 points and Bobby Ivey added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Elmhurst wraps up its non-conference schedule by traveling to Concordia University-Chicago on December 29.
