RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Elmhurst men's basketball team tied a school-record for rebounds in a game while closing out its non-conference season by cruising past Concordia University-Chicago 99-52.
Elmhurst finished its non-conference schedule with a 10-1 record and is currently ranked sixth in the nation in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll.
The Bluejays scored the game's opening bucket and never trailed in the contest. With the score even at 4-4, Elmhurst ripped off a 17-4 run over an eight-minute span to open up a 13-point cushion. Leading 28-15 with 8:34 left, the Bluejays used a 12-3 run to open up a 22-point advantage. Elmhurst led by as many as 25 points in the first 20 minutes and carried a 51-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Elmhurst continued to pull away in the second half, leading by as many as 55 points before coming away with the 47-point victory.
The Bluejays pulled down 57 rebounds in the victory, matching an Elmhurst single-game record set during the 1992 season against Barat College. The Bluejays finished the contest with a +23 rebounding margin.
Elmhurst shot 56.6 percent (39-of-69) from the floor, including 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays were dominant in the lane, outscoring Concordia 54-20 in the paint.
Twelve different players put points on the scoreboard and five Bluejays reached double figures in scoring in the victory.
Kyle Wuest led the way with 15 points, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor. He added four assists in the win.
Will Nixon finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Nixon also blocked a shot, to become Elmhurst's all-time leader in blocked shots with 103, surpassing the previous mark of 102 set by Brent Ruch (2005-09).
Peyton Wyatt added 12 points, shooting 4-of-6 from downtown.
Bryant Ackerman and
Kenny Payonk added 10 points apiece. Payonk pulled down eight rebounds in the win.
Brandon Schwebke added nine points while
Erik Crittenden scored seven.
Concordia-Chicago shot just 25.4 percent (17-of-67) from the field, including just 17.2 percent (5-of-29) from long distance. Mitch Pellisier led Concordia with 18 points in the loss. Mike Walmer chipped in with nine.
Elmhurst opens CCIW play this Saturday, January 2, by hosting Illinois Wesleyan University at 4:00 p.m.
