Men's Basketball Team Cruises Past Curry in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season by rolling past Curry College for an 83-61 victory.

The Bluejays scored the game's first seven points and never looked back, outscoring Curry 26-2 over the game's first 10 minutes. The Bluejays led by as many as 28 points in the opening half and carried a 44-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Curry (0-1) trimmed the Bluejays' lead down to 18 points early in the second half, but the Bluejays responded with a 25-8 run over the next 10 minutes to build a commanding 35-point cushion. Curry closed out the final 7:30 by outscoring the Bluejays' bench 21-8 to make the final score 83-61 for Elmhurst. 

Elmhurst shot 48.3 percent from the floor (28-of-58), including 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from downtown. The Bluejays were solid from the foul line, hitting 22-of-30 attempts (73.3 percent).

Sixteen different players saw the floor and 13 Bluejays put points on the scoreboard in the victory. Four players reached double figures in scoring as part of a balanced Elmhurst attack. Elmhurst's bench scored 51 points in the victory. 

Brandon Schwebke led the way, finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds. Erik Crittenden finished one rebound shy of a double-double, registering 10 points and nine rebounds. Kenny Payonk chipped in with 10 points and six boards of the bench while Jalen Loving added 10 points and three rebounds. Peyton Wyatt added eight points while Kyle Wuest and Will Nixon chipped in with seven points apiece. 

Elmhurst dominated on the glass, outrebounding Curry 44-26. The Bluejays also outscored Curry 34-18 in the paint.

Curry shot 37.3 percent (19-of-51) from the floor, including 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from beyond the arc. Paul Preziosi led Curry in the loss with 14 points and six rebounds while Trey Jones came off the bench to score 13. Jason O'Neill added 12 points in the loss. 

Elmhurst, ranked eighth in the D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, plays at Greenville on Friday, November 20.
