LISLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team, ranked 15th in the latest AVCA Division III National Poll, upped its record to 23-9 on the season by sweeping Aurora University and Dominican University at the Benedictine Invitational.
ELMHURST 3, AURORA 0 - Elmhurst opened the day with a three-set sweep of Aurora, making short work of the Spartans with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-21 win.
Elmhurst trailed early in the opening set before pulling even at 14-all. The Bluejays closed out the set with an 11-1 run, keyed by 10 points behind the serve of
Hannah Nimrick. The second set was knotted at 15-all before Elmhurst closed with a 10-3 run.
The third set was even at 16-16, but a 4-1 run by the Bluejays gave Elmhurst a three-point cushion. Elmhurst opened up 24-21 lead and an attack error on the Spartans sealed the match for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst hit .330 for the contest with 43 kills and 14 errors in 88 attempts.
Alli Rogers paced the Bluejays' attack with 14 kills while hitting .370 in the match.
Mary Lawrence added nine kills while Nimrick totaled seven kills and 26 assists.
Amy Schryver led the squad's defense with 13 digs.
Hannah Lanasa paced the Spartans in the loss, finishing with nine kills. Peyton McKenzie added seven kills while Emily Lines totaled 22 assists.
ELMHURST 3, DOMINICAN 0 - Elmhurst recorded its 23rd win of the season with a tightly contested 27-25, 26-24, 25-21 win over Dominican.
Both teams built small leads in the opening set only to see them evaporate. Dominican led 22-19, but a 4-1 run by the Bluejays evened the score at 23-all. Dominican fought off a pair of set points at 24-23 and 25-24 to even the score at 25-all, but a kill from
Mel Lundin and a block from Lawrence and Nimrick gave Elmhurst the opening set at 27-25.
Elmhurst built a 16-13 lead in the second set, but an 11-5 run gave Dominican three set points at 24-21. The Bluejays fought off all three point and closed the set with a 5-0 run to take the set 26-24.
Dominican (22-8) grabbed a 15-13 lead midway through the third set, but Elmhurst responded with an 11-1 run to take a 24-16 lead. The Stars fought off five straight set points to pull to within three points at 24-21, but a kill from
Shannon Burns ended the match for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst hit .149 in the contst with 45 kills and 25 errors in 134 attempts. Lundin led a balanced Elmhurst attack with 10 kills and six blocks. Nimrick, Rogers and Lawrence tallied seven kills apiece in the victory. Burns finished with six kills for the Bluejays while Schryver led the squad in digs with 17.
Hannah Davis chipped in with five blocks while Rogers (10), Nimrick (12) and
Kerry Swain (11) also reached double figures in digs.
Elmhurst wraps up the 2015 regular season on Tuesday, November 3, by hosting Carthage College.
