Bluejays Drop CCIW Finale To Carthage

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team dropped its final regular season contest of the season, falling to 13th-ranked Carthage 15-25, 25-14, 20-25, 20-25. 

With the loss, Elmhurst fell to 23-10 overall and 4-3 in the CCIW. Carthage upped its record to 29-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference. Elmhurst, ranked 17th in the latest AVCA Division III poll with be the fourth seed in this weekend's upcoming CCIW Tournament.

Carthage grabbed a quick lead in the opening set at 9-5 and never looked back. Elmhurst closed to within at two points at 12-10, but the Lady Reds closed the set on a 13-5 run to grab the first set. 

Elmhurst dominated the second set, scoring the first five points and racing out to a quick 10-2 lead.. Carthage came no closer than a five points for the duration of the set as the Bluejays pulled away for the 25-14 win.

Carthage scored the first seven points of the fourth set to grab a quick lead. The Bluejays pulled to within four points at 16-12, but the Lady Reds extended their lead back up to eight points before putting away the set at 25-20.

The Lady Reds started quickly in the fourth set, grabbing a 10-7 lead only to see the the Bluejays pull even at 11. Elmhurst surged in front at 17-15 after a kill from Alli Rogers, but Carthage ripped off the next four points to grab a 19-17 lead. Elmhurst pulled to within a point at 20-19, but the Lady Reds finished off the set with a 5-1 run to put away the match.

Elmhurst finished the match hitting .170 with 48 kills and 25 errors in 135 attempts. The Bluejays' struggled with Carthage's serve, committing nine receive errors. Rogers powered the Bluejays' attack, finishing with 13 kills and six digs. Mel Lundin and Mary Lawrence added nine kills apiece in the loss. Lawrence chipped in with four blocks as well. Hannah Nimrick finished with six kills, 11 digs and 32 assists while Peggy Clemens totaled 10 digs in the loss. 

Carthage hit .158 for the contest with 41 kills and 22 errors in 120 swings. Emily Heuermann led the way with 14 kills and 12 digs. Stephanie Korbakes added 11 kills. Karen Chin tallied 32 assists and 12 digs while Luci Krenzke added 12 digs. 

Elmhurst will be the fourth seed in the CCIW Tournament on Friday. The Bluejays will face top-seeded Millikin University at 7:00 p.m. Carthage (three seed) and Illinois Wesleyan (two seed) will meet in the other semifinal at 4:30 p.m.
