Alec Gnass scored twice, including a 105th-minute game winner, to help the Elmhurst men's soccer team upset 22nd-ranked Wheaton 2-1.
Alec GnassThe Bluejays (3-6-1, 1-0 CCIW) broke the scoreboard first in the 27th minute. Sam Johnson beat his defender to the ball near the end line, forcing Wheaton keeper Matt Paprocki to defend him. Johnson surveyed his options, found Gnass in the middle of the field, and the Elmhurst midfielder knocked his first goal of the season to the far post.
Nick KingDespite being out shot 12-3, Elmhurst went into halftime with a 1-0 lead on the back of five saves from
Nick King. The Elmhurst keeper dove to catch a shot in the 33rd minute and, a minute later, won a one-on-one battle with an attacker with a slide deflection.
The Thunder finally found their equalizer in the 79th minute. Marshall Hollingsworth lifted a free kick into the box that pinballed off many bodies before Noah Gulley made a diving attempt that was blocked into the air. Off the deflection, Reed Bartley hit a header inside the far post.
The teams went into double overtime still tied at one. Five minutes in, Gnass scored the game-winner sending the Elmhurst bench and fans into a frenzy.
Jeff Kading lifted a cross to the far post, Wheaton keeper Matt Paprocki missed a punch, and Gnass buried the game-winning goal.
Wheaton out shot Elmhurst 20-8, but the Bluejays capitalized on two of their four shot on goal. King finished the game with six save, while Paprocki stopped two Elmhurst attempts.
Elmhurst hits the road this Monday, October 5 to face Simpson College in a non-conference matchup.
