Volleyball Kicks Off Tournament With Five-Set Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Elmhurst volleyball team came back from 0-4 and 3-7 fifth-set deficits to defeat the 19th-ranked UW-Oshkosh Titans 25-15, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-13. 

The Bluejays (15-4), ranked 15th in the latest AVCA National Poll, took leads in each of the first three sets against the Titans (14-4). UW-Oshkosh stormed back late in the second and won the fourth to send the match to five sets.

Elmhurst hit .400 in the first set on its way to winning 25-15. The Bluejays jumped ahead in the first set 11-5 only to watch their lead dwindle to three at 13-10. After calling a timeout, Elmhurst used a 12-5 run to take the set. Six different Bluejays recorded a kill during the run and Mary Lawrence put the set away with her third kill of the set. Hannah Nimrick totaled 10 assists and four kills on five swings in the set. 

The Bluejays continued their hot start in the second set, jumping out to a 13-6 lead, but the Titans stormed back to take their first lead of the match at 15-14. The Bluejays watched 22-20 lead slip away as UW-Oshkosh took the last five points of the set and leveled the match. 

The third set took a similar path, but this time Elmhurst held on to its lead. The Bluejays pulled out to a seven-point lead, their largest in the set, at 23-16 and took the set 25-20 on a UW-Oshkosh attack error. 

With their backs against the wall tied 15-15 in the fourth set, the Titans sent the match to five with a 10-5 run. They carried the momentum into the fifth, taking two four-point leads, but Elmhurst stormed back to tie at 10-10 and then converted on its third match point. 

Alli Rogers and Lawrence led the Bluejay offense with 16 and 15 kills respectively. Nimrick added seven kills, 49 assists, and 11 digs, while Amy Schryver (20) and Ani Agbabian (11) joined Nimrick with double-digit digs. Hannah Davis totaled a game-high five blocks and hit .385. Elmhurst also had the advantage in aces 7-0. 

Elmhurst faces Cornell College (Iowa) today at 5:00 p.m. Mountain Time.
